Human drama is the flavour of the season. And if there is anything we have learned from the past releases, it is that the pattern ain’t going anywhere anytime soon. Tapping into the genre, Shraddha Kapoor dipped her toes in the pond her contemporaries including Alia Bhatt have been playing splish splash for quite some time. In and as Haseena Parkar: The Queen of Mumbai, Shraddha played the gangster-cum-godmother and brought her story to celluloid shelf. For those not in the know, Haseena was the sister of a notorious crime lord and world’s most wanted mafia Dawood Ibrahim. And that fact perhaps was the only thing that dictated her life path and even of those in her shadow.
Shraddha stepped out of her comfort zone for this biopic. She has played of-age parts in Aashiqui 2, Rock On! 2, Haider, Half Girlfriend, Batti Gul Meter Chalu among others but this biographical flick was a different ball game altogether. Let alone that it included a great deal of threat, considering the subject in question. But Haseena Parkar’s family was very supportive of Shraddha, director Apoorva Lakhia and their team.
Talking about her prep, Shraddha revealed that Parkar’s family, in fact, handed her some of the items that belonged to her for the filming. “I felt like a journalist of sorts because I met them with three pages of questions about what Haseena was like. For instance, they said she had this quiet confidence about her, a kind of change that comes about only if you have gone through the kind of losses she had. When you are completely spent and empty and numb, with no more tears left…. I tried my best to imagine what it would feel like to lose one’s husband and son and be so spent,” she told a leading news portal in an interview.
“We had many script readings before going on set. I took her to Nagpada, Parkar’s former stronghold, in a burqa to meet Haseena’s tailor, teacher, etc. We picked up things from her wardrobe, such as her spectacles and nose rings, and used them in the film,” director Lakhia asserted. However, a leading tabloid reported that once the shoot was over, the team sent back Haseena Parkar’s belongings. But the family was kind enough to send a special souvenir for Shraddha, a huge nose ring that was the starlet’s absolute favourite.
Haseena Parkar also featured Shraddha’s real brother Siddhant Kapoor as Dawood Ibrahim. Co-produced by Sameer Antulay and Babu Tyagi and produced by Nahid Khan, presented by Swiss Entertainment, the biopic also featured Ankur Bhatia in a pivotal role.
