Kay Kay Menon, a film, stage and television actor who works predominantly in Hindi cinema, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, and Telugu cinema, headlines the latest episode of ZEE5 original horror series Parchhayee. Menon, who was last seen in the movie 3 Dev, essays the role of Professor Oliver Edford, a physical training teacher at an all-boys boarding school. Oliver enjoys a reputation for his strict discipline and unwavering demeanour amongst the students. Titled Face in the Dark, the 10th episode of Parchhayee revolves around Oliver and a student named Kartik.

The opening shot begins with a student jumping off a cliff, leaving his bag and personal diary behind. We see Oliver jogging his way to the school in the next scene. He addresses the new batch of students via a speaker, from atop a crest in a sports ground. “I am the custodian and guardian of discipline and I don’t joke,” he warns the boys. He is introducing the new batch of children to his ways of teaching. In his set of instructions, the professor slips in a warning for the boys – the cliff area behind the playground is strictly off-limits to students. Oliver also lists down his ten commandments that no pupil is allowed to disobey. During the interaction, he catches Kartik and his friend giggling over a drawing the former has made of their new teacher. Oliver sees the picture and decides to punish Kartik.

Oliver tells Kartik that all of 14 and yet he cannot tie a tie knot properly. He asks him to untie it and make a perfect knot, standing by the goalpost, facing it. Next, we see Oliver asks his partner-in-crime Sunny to kick the ball on Kartik’s back. The number of misses will be the number of rounds he will have run. The students discuss Oliver’s ‘sadistic’ ways of training and seem unhappy with his behaviour. Kartik encounters a series of strange incidents in the school and around the restricted area. Oliver, on the other hand, gets bit by his rat and decides to lock his cage with knives.

Ever since the first day, Oliver continues to torture Kartik into becoming a sportsman. He vows to turn the painter into a super athlete. The more pain Oliver tries to inflict on Kartik, the more he suffers himself. He nearly gets his hand burnt, and takes leave for the first time in 25 years at the school. On the other hand, a new boy Jugal is introduced to Kartik. But who is he? Why does he want to befriend Kartik? Are Jugal and Oliver related? Watch the episode to find out!

Kay Kay delivers fantastically as the stern coach. He is severe, harsh, uncompromising in his way and inflexible in his attitude. We have seen the actor ace such roles in the past on the silver screen and thus, this outing comes as no surprise. The background score excellently complements the scary elements and acting finesse of the characters. Shot in a real location, Face in the Dark puts every stop in the way to maintain the thrill and suspense till the last minute of the episode. Even the schoolboys do not miss their parts and deliver with great timing.
